Sheet Metal Nesting Software: What It Does
Sheet metal nesting software arranges flat parts on metal stock so a machine can cut the maximum number of parts from each sheet with the least scrap. Because metal is expensive and often cut on laser, plasma, or punch machines, even a few percent of extra yield has a large effect on cost.
What nesting software does
Nesting takes a list of parts — typically as DXF geometry — and packs them onto sheets without overlap, respecting spacing for the cutting process. It then exports a layout the cutting machine can follow, minimizing both the number of sheets and the cutting path length.
Rectangular vs. true-shape nesting
Rectangular nesting treats each part as its bounding box — fast and ideal when parts are mostly rectangular. True-shape (irregular) nesting follows each part’s actual outline, letting concave parts interlock for higher yield. Complex profiles benefit most from true-shape nesting.
Process-specific spacing
- Laser: tight spacing; thin kerf allows parts close together.
- Plasma: wider spacing to account for a broader kerf and heat-affected zone.
- Punch: spacing tied to tooling and the machine grid.
- Waterjet: narrow kerf but allow for taper on thick material.
